It wasn't easy but I managed to take a few pictures of some butterflies this summer.  The Buddleia in the garden were absolutely covered in butterflies on the few days when the sun actually came out and I managed to take a few pictures.

I've been experimenting with my shorter focal length lens to make the most of some great looking clouds.
Hero & Badger having a groom in the field.
James looking moody under some dark clouds.
Three elegant ladies in the Side Saddle Showing class at Mooreland Stables.

Here are a couple of pictures where I've altered the colour saturation.  In the first I've increased the green to make the few blades of grass really standout against the dry earth.  In the second I've decreased the saturation so the colour of the flowers stands out against the lush long grass.

Last Saturday was the first Dressage Competition of the year and luckily it didn't rain!  Catering for all levels of confidence and ability (both horse and rider) I always enjoy taking pictures at Mooreland's because of the friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
I also tried converting a couple of pictures to Black & White to give something a bit different from the standard composition.

The cats are fascinated by running water and will take any opportunity to drink from it.  Here is a first attempt at taking some pictures of Kato having a play with the kitchen tap.  I think that as both the cats enjoy a shower in the sink that this is a subject I may return to and experiment with.

What a difference two weeks makes, the snow is all gone and whilst the weather isn't quite tropical it was nice enough for a visit to Birdland in Desford, Leicestershire.  Whilst most of the birds were behind mesh in aviaries, there are quite a number of tropical birds flying free which make for an interesting  and different subject to photograph.

I've posted a couple of pictures this time both showing James releasing energy in the field.  After spending a week stuck in the stable due to the snow and ice we put James out Saturday and managed to capture the first image as he cavorted around.  The second shot is from the next day, still a bit fresh James had a roll in his new rug and as he got up bucked.  I managed to capture the moment he had all four feet of the ground - Boing.

This months picture came about from playing with an image in Lightroom.  What started out as a straightforward shot of a horses head looks more striking to me, just by removing any distracting background and allowing the focus to be drawn to the eye.
The horse in this picture (Hero) has been quite poorly recently but thankfully it looks like he's on the mend.

This months photograph is another one of James in the field.  This time I decided to get down very low to get a different point of view and I think it just about sums-up this December.
This December has been really mild, especially when compared with the Arctic weather of last year.  So with the short days and wet conditions mud has ended up as the focal point.  I'm now looking forward to what January will bring whether it's something new to photograph or finding a new angle on previous subjects.
Hope you've all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Why start a blog?
I'm not one for putting the world to rights or sharing my every thought and movement. What I am looking to achieve with this blog is a way of pushing myself to go out and take more photographs.  Not just take photographs but to share the photos and give some reasons why.   Does it tell a story, capture a moment or is it technically good, did it need no post processing (because all settings on the camera were right in the first place) or lots (when capturing the moment didn't allow getting it right in camera).  Looking to do something different, a different point of view, a different subject or different technique to try.  There is so much more to photography than point and shoot and I want to push myself to explore as much as I can, so my aim is to post at least one picture a month.

So first up is "Grass is always Greener"
I've chosen this picture because it wasn't what I set out to take.  I took my camera when turning James out in the morning because for the previous 3 days he had collapsed in a heap and rolled and I wanted to try and get a picture of him having a squirm.  True to form all he did was saunter off and and start eating.  After waiting a while with no sign of James playing ball I was about to leave when he started trying to graze the nicer grass from the next field and this is the picture I came away with.  Not sure what anyone else thinks but I quite like it.
